Metro Atlanta unemployment drops to 7.6 percent
ATLANTA (AP) — State officials say metro Atlanta’s unemployment rate has declined to 7.6 percent in April.
Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday the number of jobs in metro Atlanta increased by about 13,000 last month. The rate was an improvement over the 7.9 percent posted in March and the 8.5 percent for April 2012.
Butler says jobs in Atlanta are at the highest level since 2007 and there are encouraging signs with construction jobs growing for the fourth consecutive month.

Lawyers for death row inmate ask SCOTUS to step in
ATLANTA (AP) — Lawyers for a Georgia death row inmate are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to step in to prevent the execution of their client, who they say is mentally disabled.
Lawyers for Warren Hill have long argued he is mentally disabled and shouldn’t be executed. Three experts for the state who originally said Hill was not mentally disabled now say he is, citing advances in research.

Ga. Rep. Brooks, lawyer to address federal charges
MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) — Georgia state Rep. Tyrone Brooks is set to appear at a news conference to address federal fraud and tax evasion charges against him.
The news conference Thursday afternoon will be held at the office of Brooks’ lawyer, former Gov. Roy Barnes. Brooks pleaded not guilty before a federal magistrate judge Wednesday.
A 30-count federal indictment handed down last week charges him with mail fraud, wire fraud and filing false tax returns.

Battleground soil given place of honor in Atlanta
ATLANTA (AP) — It seemed like a mission impossible, but Richard A. Lester believed it could be done.
A month ago, the retired Army lieutenant colonel had a brainstorm that the Atlanta History Center’s dedication of its redone Veterans Park on Memorial Day would be more memorable if it could include a “Sacred Soil” ceremony. Lester’s idea was to sprinkle dirt collected from the battlegrounds of every major conflict that America has engaged in, from the Revolutionary War to Afghanistan.

Feds investigate after plane parts land on GA home
ELLENWOOD, Ga. (AP) — Federal authorities are investigating after a Boeing 747 on approach to Atlanta's airport lost parts from its right wing that landed on a woman's house in Clayton County.
The Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday the China Airlines flight landed safely at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport after Sunday's incident. No injuries were reported.
Homeowner Pamela Ware told WSB-TV in Atlanta (http://bit.ly/16a9TRH ) that she's thankful she survived after part of the wing hit her house Sunday afternoon.
